Logan was frozen on the sidewalk in front of the bar, the noise of the neon sign buzzing the only thing louder than the breath catching in his throat. His hands balled themselves into fists, his eyes wide. He pressed the nail from one of his fingers into the pad of another so hard that it hurt. He blinked a few times, turning back the way he came. Maybe he was seeing things. As he strode in the other direction, Logan felt the sweat start to collect on the back of his neck. He walked more quickly down the street, going back the way he’d come. If he could just get back to his motel and get to his car, he might have a fighting chance to escape.

Logan glanced over his shoulder, trying not to make it obvious that he’d spotted the sedan, although he quickly realized his about-face would tell the driver all he needed to know. The black sedan rolled slowly away from the curb. Another car passed it, honking its horn, an obvious complaint about the sedan moving so slowly in traffic. Logan began to jog. He had to get away. He paused for a second, trying to get his bearings. A tingle ran down his spine. In his concern about the test results, he hadn’t paid attention to exactly where he was going. He stopped, staring, feeling a wave of confusion washing over him.

He was lost.

Bile rose in the back of his throat as the darkness descended over the decrepit neighborhood he was in. Logan dodged down an alleyway that stank of cat urine, running from the car that was following him. He paused at the next intersection, as two girls, their arms linked, glanced back at him and walked faster in the other direction. He looked for anything that looked familiar.

Nothing did.

Running, Logan darted past a corner market that had closed for the night. He spotted a gas station, brightly lit up on the next corner. Sprinting for it, he ran around the back of the building, panting. Leaning against the cool brick exterior, trying to catch his breath, he pulled out his phone. If he could find the address for the motel, he could use the maps feature to get a GPS location. At least he’d be running in the correct direction. Logan swallowed, his mouth dry. The adrenaline was surging in his body so heavily that he could barely operate the phone, his fingers covered in sweat sliding all over the screen, his hands shaking.

Logan froze as he heard an engine behind him approaching the gas station. He peered out from behind the building to see the sedan with the tinted windows, followed by a pickup truck. As he was about to run, he heard the back door of the gas station open, an older woman coming outside, her eyes narrowing at him. “What do you think you’re doing back here?” she yelled. “If you think you’re going to stand back here and get drunk or do drugs, you ain’t.
